Never mind the actual job, keep that stuff looking good in the event of an inspection!
I actually got in trouble for adjusting the straps on my aircrew body armor. When flying into known hot spots, I liked to have my gear fit correctly, and be able to use the quick-detach straps that the equipment was designed with.
However, because the life-support guys wanted it to look good on the shelf, they retied it every time I returned it from a mission. When I would go out on the next mission, I would adjust it again. After the Life Support shop threatened to dock my pay $1400 for using my equipment as designed, I simply said “screw it” and flew with my not-rated-for-flight ground IBA (which as it turned out, actually worked better for me anyways.)
